Best wine racks for small spaces

You don't need a cellar to store wine well — just a dark, cool spot and a rack that holds bottles on their side (so the cork stays moist). Stackable, wall-mounted, or countertop, here are three setups that fit any kitchen.

The basics

Three rules for storing wine right

  1. 1. Lay bottles on their side. Wine touching the cork keeps it from drying out and shrinking. Vertical storage is fine for a few weeks; horizontal is right for anything longer.
  2. 2. Keep it cool and steady. 50–60°F / 10–15°C is ideal. Wide swings (like next to a stove or radiator) age wine faster than the temperature itself.
  3. 3. Avoid direct light. UV can damage wine over months. A pantry, closet, or shaded counter is fine. A sunny windowsill is not.
